About Us
Welcome to Wickramabahu National College, a beacon of educational excellence and community spirit. Our journey began on January 3, 1946, with the founding of Wallahagoda Central College. Starting with just four teachers and 55 students, our humble beginnings took place within the serene surroundings of the Niyangampaya Raja Maha Viharaya Buddhist temple.
In 1951, a significant milestone was achieved when Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake laid the foundation for our new building. By 1954, the new premises were officially opened, and the college was renamed Gampola Central College. This period marked the commencement of High School Certificate classes in 1952, with English as the medium of instruction.
In 1955, the language of instruction transitioned to Sinhalese, reflecting our commitment to embracing local culture and language. A pivotal moment in our history occurred in 1960 when the education system underwent significant reforms. As a result, Gampola Central College evolved into a boys-only institution and was renamed Wickramabahu Central College.
Today, under the visionary leadership of Mrs. Kokila, Wickramabahu National College continues to thrive as a center of learning and growth. We are dedicated to providing our students with a holistic education and a nurturing environment that fosters their academic and personal development.
